Chapter Ten â Heâs Made A Sucker Out Of You
âAh, here you are, Mr. Clint, Mr. Blood!â Albert Brickhouse greeted jovially, rising from his place at one end of the well-laid table in the main dining-room of the Hacienda Naranja. âCome in, gentlemen, come in. I trust you are finding your accommodation to your complete satisfaction.â
âIt surely is for me,â the Indian dark Texan declared and, as his companion nodded in agreement, he continued, âI know ole Rapido here has, but Iâve for sure never been given the chance to sleep in nothing so fancy.â
After completing the telephone conversation with Minnie Lassiter, which had put him in an even better mood than when he was exhibiting his collection of unconventional works of art to Comanche Blood, the financier had yielded to Victor Torresonâs hints and settled down to resume the interrupted discussion. He had given further evidence of his shrewdness by commenting upon the fact that, despite frequently employing the jargon of cowhands and criminals, Rapido Clint also spoke in the manner of one who had had a good background and superior education to that of his companion. 49Although the small Texan had admitted to being the black sheep of a well-to-do family, he had refused to supply any further details. In fact, he had stated bluntly that he would take the gravest exception to any attempts to pry into the matter.
Accepting the warning and changing the subject with either real, or well simulated amiability, Brickhouse had offered to employ the two young Texans to help reinforce his guard. There had been a brief debate upon the matter of how much money they would receive for their services. The sum was settled, but it had been at a somewhat lower figure than was suggested by Clint. Countering the demand, the financier had pointed out that not only might there be no actual danger involved, but they would have all their food, liquor, such arms and ammunition as they required and accommodation provided for as long as they stayed at the Hacienda Naranja. On those points having been conceded and the deal concluded, Torreson had taken them upstairs to their quarters.
As Blood had intimated, the two young men would have been very hard to please if they had not been satisfied with the accommodation to which they were allocated. They were put into adjoining rooms, with a sturdy connecting balcony which would offer adequate protection and a reasonably safe firing point in the event of an attack. While not as luxurious as those of the library, dining-room and, they suspected, the financierâs quarters, the furnishings were clean and comfortable. There was only one point to which they had taken exception. While the doors had bolts on the inside, there was no way they could be locked from the outside when the occupants were not present.
On showing the Texans in, Torreson had commented that the double beds would be useful when, as frequently happened, girls were brought in from Juarez to entertain those of the fighting force who were not on guard duty.
